Fringe..

Fringes - that's the Australian word for bangs. I like that. Fringes. I mean what "are" bangs? Because that's the part of the head where mothers bang when they have sons who ride scooters into traffic? Perhaps I do have bangs then and not fringe!

Fringe Benefits of living in a society where hard work does happen...but play and relaxation is a vital part of life! America could learn from this! Fringe benefits here...Rob playing tennis in the cool of the morning with our friend Jonathan. (90 at 8:30)

Fringe also makes me think of silver lining.....after being in a place where the sun just bears down on us entirely...I begin to wonder why I grew up detesting clouds. I believe I've gone from one extreme to another! Most days, I don't care if the clouds had lining or not...I just WANT clouds! Did you ever have chance to notice that the sky is more vivid and striking when there are some clouds to give contrast?

I think we need clouds in our lives to give contrast to help us really see what is good, what is right and who we are vs who we should be! As well as who we once were vs who we are now!!

How do you spell relief?

FROM AMERICA! Today, I found 4 bags of doritos from America!!!!!! Not the European wanna-be's that remind me of something stale and tasteless.....

the good ole - take a bag, grab a friend, a sappy movie and devour it in one sitting...THAT kind of doritos!

The last time I ate these, I was surrounded by the frienddship, love and hugs of some INCREDIBLY special ladies 2 days before leaving the country......

the memories are fresh and I feel so - overwhelmed by love, lump in my throat and tears in my eyes....

I LOVE YOU, FRIENDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

So for some weird notes - Joshua must be approaching puberty early, because he's getting clumsy - I thought this was a girl thing? 2 days ago, he ran into a brick wall and mangled his legs - thankfully no infection still - but it was a "potty wall" so EEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! Yesterday, he jumped off a curb into a roundabout...the car saw him at the last minute and swerved, thankfully Joshua hit the car instead of the car hitting him.....the driver was so happy he was fine and happy I spoke Arabic....today, Joshua decided to do some sort of Michael Jackson move and wipe out a few cans of olives.....the manager told me I spend so much money there, he's not worried about it..then he scolded Joshua in broken English.

Yesterday, Jasmine and I, for the first time, organized the spice/soup/etc cupboard in the kitchen. Today she used Arabic to thank a lady at the store!

Today at the store, I made a new friend...helped a Canadian woman with 2 young children who just arrived and was out of food and water, didn't speak any Arabic and felt so overwhelmed....I told her i have been there too many times Feb and March. I think we'll be good friends now! And I talked with her to my delivery guys so she's all set, even told her about the high tipping ;) ($1 USD per man in the heat!) I am so glad God keeps using me and shows His purpose for me on such a daily basis so that I don't feel so lost in this world myself!!!

Well, Rob's in line at the phone company to pay his bill - been there more than an hour....he should be home soon and I need to dust the dorito dust off the computer..

WHAT? YOU THOUGHT I STOPPED MUNCHING TO TYPE TO YOU?!

A trip up the river....

I think perhaps the negative term 'up the river' came from someone who has ridden the barges of Egypt "up the river" and gotten off at an island that is advertised as entertainment for children, clean open areas with grass......

I'm not sure there is anything true in the advertisement. Except the word "open"

This is not a nice posting. BEWARE!

"Open" to freaks who take children and pass them back and forth and have to be aggressively removed by their parents.

"Open" to destroy everything beautiful the English once built for the Egyptians to create a holiday spot.

"Open" to beat horses and starve them and leave their dead carcasses alongside the road with the garbage.

"Open" to kids under 12 racing motorcycles on the streets w/o helmets or watching for horses or pedestrians

"Open" to interpretation...
when it says it leaves at 9, it doesn't leave until 11...but they are open to tell you every 30 min that it'll leave in 30 min.

"Open" to harrassment by unmarried men and no escape.

"Open" to walking in 102 degrees without hope of finding extra water or a bathroom...with a backpack, carrying a little girl and convincing a son to keep pressing on....

"Open" to pooping in a 'room' and leaving it where it lays - hoping it hits the small hole in the ground...holding your son over one to poop and your daughter over on to pee.

"Open" to touching me, pulling my camera away slowly on a bench...OPEN TO BEING YELLED AT BY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THEN the opportunity to repeat the 2.5 hr trip home and repeat.....I was "open" to push my way off the barge when it docked, the kids and I were 2 blocks away before Rob called wondering where we were!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here are a couple interesting photos.

**NEEEEEEVER TAKE THE BARGES IN CAIRO!**

NEVER EVER EVER!!

NEVER GO TO THE ISLAND NEAR THE NILE RIVER DELTA! you'd be better off to slit your wrists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The great thing about today was that IT ENDED! oh and that Jonathan, Sarah and family are WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The clothes have been thru the wash machine twice now from today - PUKE! pizza is on its way, my asthma is acting up - I haven't had this much trouble since Michigan! That place is CURSED!

ok, so maybe that is a harsh evaluation, to say it's cursed...but trust me...

DO

NOT

GO!

This photo was taken 20 min after we got on the barge....I should've taken an after shot of my disshelved hair, scrunched up angry face with red skin and a shirt so wet I could WRING IT OUT! and my kids whining and begging for it to end

What We Saw In Sharm el-Sheikh

head sized - maybe bigger

MANY different types of parrot fish - most longer than my forearm ALL very friendly - I took this...I did NOT zoom in!!

this guy below was about as big as Joshua - his face cracks me up!! jasmine cried and panicked when she stuck her face in and saw it!poor dear (lol)

proof that Jasmine and I got in too. I did snorkle for quite long slots of time, I was surprised that the slow waves - ok side bar - the waves in Cabo san Lucas Mexico were DEADLY - the waves here at Sharm were just rolling...even Lake Michigan seems more dangerous on a calm day...but those low tumbling and movement made me quite sick each time. I also didn't like diving very far to let go of Jasmine OR to be with fish bigger than me! But these are just some silly pics of us. Joshua would go down 10-15' actually! Rob went more like 30'!! snorkling!

a puffer fish!!!

Eagle ray - approximate span of 4'

photos do not do size, color or "awe" level justice!

6' + long fish - see the fins near the back?

exploring crabs of all sizes! Omnaya found the biggest - shell larger than our hands!

Davy-Joshua totally looks like he's doing TKD! ha!!

jelly fish bigger than our heads!

a lion fish - above it is the floating docks where you get in and out of the sea....he was by the ladder - PRAISE THE LORD - Joshua knows it is VERY poisonous, he chose NOT to go up that ladder!! but they did watch it - just the boys saw this and the ray and the jellyfish.

plenty of fish MUCH longer than Jasmine and MUCH beefier than me!!

parasailing for the boys - Jasmine too small but willing - Wendy too horrified and didn't even get in the boat! raise your hand if you're suprised by the latter comment! LOL

horseback riding lessons!

ice skating!

breathtaking sunsets

The rest is not kid-friendly....

I made lots of friends with Egyptians on holiday! I got a pedicure and a great foot massage that BROUGHT MY FOOT TO ALMOST 100% i even ran on it awhile today!!

all in all, it was even for the really horrible with the really oustanding.

It was 113-120 degrees. So stinkin hot, that it's difficult to describe! Rob has been here plenty of times and kept telling me it's even hotter than Cabo in the summer, and somehow it IS! the humidity and sun - KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had heat exhaustion after the first day and had to be VERY careful!!! We wore shirts in the water most of the time. Rob got sunburned and had to stay out of the sun cuz he couldn't take the heat thru his shirt.

I got food poisoning and we came home early.

The place was very European - people warned me, I didn't "get" it - it means it was mostly nude (wearing only flip flops and a thong, no tops not that the bottom covered much) and repulsive. The Europeans fly in on holiday and they are mostly rude and depraved outwardly. I never want to return.

Thankfully, Joshua was repulsed by their lack of modesty and not old enough to be intrigued PRAISE GOD!

So - there it is! The good, the bad and the really incredible!!

Thanks for looking!

a group photo outside the resort

**what a LOVELY couple of families we traveled with**

Just thought it deserved it's own post!

Agaaza fi Sharm esh-Sheik - rakbiin el-3arabaya

Holiay in Sharm el-Sheik, riding in the car
(Americans only use the word vacation, here it's a holiday even in English)
(you don't use el in front of d,s, sh, r, n, t, z oh lots of rules)
(we say sheek in English, but in Arabic is "shake" and said with the throaty, spitty K not the English K...as my teacher would tell you, pretend you're selling potatoes from a donkey cart at the side of the road...work up some spit and GO!

So here's the drive there and back...HERE'S WHAT WE SAW!!

four different herds of WILD camels! I had to hurry back into the car because they were "talking" to me and starting to cross the road. Curious and friendly beasts - AKIDD ANA BAHEB GAMAL AWI!
Truly, I like camels a lot!! It was such a stunning sight, I felt very overwhelmed!

Then, I saw the change in terrain - it was as if I was looking from the side at a topographical map of an ocean, the ruggedness, the sharp cliffs, the slanted lines of rock color and settlement. As we grew closer and closer to Sharm itself, the rock became more varied in color - mostly still remains the dark red. The primary color of pebbles on the beaches at the red sea....is red! next primary color a deep orange then sprinkles of tans and black.

Lots of very old cars and trucks - at this particular gas station, they spoke no English, I had to do all the dealings..since we were in the middle of nowhere, I was quite a "side show" as I brought upon myself 4 extra employees and 2 other tourists (Egyptian ones tho) HA HA! I open my mouth and they all have theirs gaping in awe.

at the blonde woman - definitely Italian, of course. HA!

Stephanie - THANKS! you know, I am Swedish and German!

Why does everyone think Italian? I found out in Sharm - it's the haircut and body style. I was told that Russians keep their hair like mine and their bodies trim like me (what a nice compliment!) but apparently they are rude and so my smile doesn't fit a Russian. I don't wear enough make up or jewelry to be an American. Italians are very friendly and keep bangs still. My English has an Arabic accent when I speak to Egyptians, so they don't hear my American English right away and Americans are the least likely to learn Arabic - so they chose Italian! It was a conversation I had with 4 Egyptians at the resort - interesting conversation really!

I did have a run-in with some Russians, my first and only (hope to be the last eek) and it wasn't pretty. Tho if you know me, you know it doesn't mean I'm saying all Russians are rude ;) Just that the ones who choose to scream in my face and curse and yell and throw their hands up unprovoked...apparently they do this to everyone....so I'm not special WHEW! glad to know it! When Mr. Russian Tattoo got in my face, the security stepped in, I never saw them again. But, I made some Egyptian (tourist) friends after that :)

of course the amazing architecture splattered around...this one was the most shocking, if you could understand how barren the land and sparse the shacks for homes...just this was shocking! beautiful architecture!

I took quite a few photos of just the driving itself to try and help you get a feel for what driving in Egypt is like. So this is a two lane road - and do you see how people pass? you just DO wherever and whenever...and everyone pulls over a bit to make it happen. yep, three cars wide....we did it often! I made a video of Rob driving, it's probably boring in most spots but when you see the guys cross suddenly on foot or the car just stopping or us driving on the dotted line between two semis in their own lanes...you'll see how WEIRD (to us) the driving is here. I likely shall never get car sick in America again ;) Rush hour has a whole new meaning - rush not meaning fast necessarily, but the "rush" of surviving the hour in the car!

and now we're doing it ourselves...

sheep and farmers at gas stations (goats running wild, even one practically climbing a tree, I'd have had to get out to get a pic, it's not a good idea for me to wander aimlessly everywhere here)

camels in the back of trucks on the highway

miles of desert with electric and other towers spinkled all over and lone trees. The lone trees made me really think...about how tho they barely receive the life-sustaining necessities..they still perform their purpose - shade, cleaning the air and beauty. While perhaps with the abundance of support needed, they could do a better job...they do not fail in their task..they still do what is necessary and do it well.

perhaps you wonder..WHAT are the roads like for such a long journey?

the answer is - the smoothest roads we've seen this side of America! HA!
mixed emotions as we departed the 5 hrs across the desert and saw a lot of greenery

and here we are! we actually had to show passports to leave the coast - I have to put in a political plug and say if we spent half the manpower on protecting our borders that Egypt does, we wouldn't need to fight wars on the other side of the globe. You would be shocked at the border protection here - wow! Perhaps some of you would be scared..and some think we should just all get along..but since that won't happen, I vote for border protection! There, said it...back to the fun stuff. I could go on and on now that I live abroad and see what an easy target the US is! Illegal Mexicans stealing jobs are the least of the worries.

McDonald's at every area that resembled civilization on any level - HA! yes we ate at this one twice actually - it's in the town of Sharm itself (said like Charm only w/ a sh sound). We were just outside of Sharm. The Sinai peninsula is the Sinai Governate. Like we live in Maadi but in the Cairo governate. Sorta like territories I guess is the closest way of thinking on it - DEFINITELY not like states tho, think more Canadian.

ships at small harbors along the Suez Canal

we actually crossed UNDER the Suez Canal to get to the peninsula

where did we go? here's a map! Remember, any post, anytime, click on a photo to enlarge! Thanks for enjoying our drive there and back! More on the stay itself later! I am surfing loads of laundry and recovering from food poisoning.

look at the tip of the peninsula, go to the East a bit....I think this map has it spelled sheyk.

If you want more - go ahead and read about Moses....about how God used him and Aaron to lead the Israelites out of slavery....across dry land....and where they wandered for 40 years - THAT is where we were! About a 3 hour drive from Mt Sinai to be precise! We also passed Tahab (spell? pronounce? lol) where they likely crossed into the land of milk and honey. From this Egyptian city, you can see Saudi, Jordan, Israel while standing where the Israelites stood - HOW COOL IS THAT?! :)
