Mom Goes Coptic

and said again it was brain overload! *however* she said she doesn't need me to pinch her anymore, she has come to accept that she's really here in Egypt ;)

She was super disappointed we couldn't photograph inside the most amazing spots! She felt amazed to see the 10 commandments and other parts of scripture engraved in GOLD in Hebrew :)

As with me and Grandpa Bob, she enjoyed the symbolism and history immensely. We had SUCH a great day again! She collects dolls and was thrilled to find one here! We also did some antiquing! We found some really great antique Egyptian metal items! Nowadays they do re-create for souvenirs and such, but we paid more for the dirt, wear, dents and imperfections! lol

Enjoy the glimpse of yesterday! Remember....Coptic is a unique religion to itself...if you want something to identify it closely - think strict Catholicism. They are a direct split from Greek Orthodox. We even saw a munk out yesterday!! I freaked out when my mom grabbed her camera, whew...it wasn't to take a photo..but to move it! ha ha ha!!!! She knew right away not to even "appear" to take his photo! whew! no bathroom issues yesterday either ;)

First (owwel) - The Coptic Museum - outside photos only. We browsed for 2 hours inside!!

Second (Taaney) - The Hanging Church (the church is suspended HIGH above the original street level, no one was hung in here ;)

Third (Taalat) below - ever seen "The Mummy Returns" ? I'm in a "bar" scene....but I'm literally in a church ;) cracked me up, had to have this photo taken! tee hee!

Fourth (raba3) Below - The church after whom the street and area is named - only foreigners call it Coptic Cairo - us locals (tee hee "us") say Mar Geargess - Saint George who was beheaded and divided for his faith.

Fifth (khaames) Crypts surround St. George church.

Sixth (saadess) behind Jasmine - original street level - still a "working" street....

finally(aackher haaga)now we're DOWN there ;)
we visited Ben Ezra Synagogue as well as St Sergius church - this is where the holy family is said to have hid in an underground cave which still exists. STUNNING! It is named after a man who was burned alive when he wouldn't renounce Jesus.

after all of that (ba3d keda)

The architecture and artwork is beautiful and amazing! I can't imagine how long it took to do one wall in some of those buildings. Have you ever asked?
I love your treasures! How cool is that, would love to see them up close sometime! You'll have to have a "Egypt Expats Return" party when the Lord directs you back to the US!
