Dashour and Memphis

I hope the photographs can help you envision a glimpse of what we saw today - really stunning! My foot handled it Ok - we drank 8 bottles of water between the 3 of us. REALLY missed you, Roberto :(

Next time!! :) He'll be there next time! :) Thankfully, it only got to 104 and the breeze was from Europe so it was cooler instead of the breeze from Saudi yesterday YIKES!

There was Carl again - single man from NY, and 2 couples from AZ - these couples said it is MUCH hotter here to them because it is MUCH more humid than AZ. So I am right when I tell you it's HUMID here, it's not just me ;) Apparently, Joshua and the one couple's oldest girl, are in swim class together at camp where he attended last week and will continue next week :) How fun!

quick view of the drive there

walking towards the Bent Pyramid - the King Snefu wanted straight flat sides, but it was too steep and began to crumble, so they "bent" it and went up from that point.

enormous limestone blocks!

our armed escort beside the bent pyramid. The smaller pyramid has not been excavated yet - they are unsure what it is for, guess is that it's a queen or someone else cherished by the king.

beside the bent pyramid, looking at the red pyramid - made with red bricks, was once appearance of red

pyramid now called "melting choclate" - it may seem close but the desert is deceiving, we just happened to have a GORGEOUS clear day!

the one above and below, are at the temple for the king's burial

walking/climb up the Red Pyramid

Hala above - wise with the umbrella! The Egyptian word for Umbrella means to block the sun! HA! not for rain
Below - the kids feelings after that climb up - Joshua still full of gusto, Jasmine needing a break! which she got - I needed one too!

Our view on this clear day - across Saqarra (where we'll be next Fri)
to the Left, you can see the step pyramid - I am unsure of the exact names of the others, but the step pyramid is obvious because of the "lines" which "steps" GORGEOUS!
oh we had to have an armed escort to shoot us should we photograph a military base hidden not too far from there ;) He was sure to make that clear to us!

This is the only photo I took "in" the pyramid" I really am sorry I didn't capture any memories on film, but...I was certain that between caring for Jasmine and the following tunnel...that a camera was too much ;) I left it at the entrance. In case you wonder, we went down AS FAR AS WE CAME UP OUTSIDE! The inside is built in "steps" on the ceiling walls with a LARGE cavity open (smells like death, by the way) for greater load bearing capacity. It is more intact than the Great Pyramid in Giza due to this structural strength!
Once DOWN inside, we climbed UP to the burial chamber which was UP as high as where we came in - you getting all that? then of course a repeat to return. The smell on the way Dashour to Memphis (seen below) is better described as a stentch similar to camels. and we are human EEEEW!!
Below is Memphis
THIS IS RAMSES II ORIGINAL ALL ORIGINAL STUFF JUST FOR HIM!!!!!! THIS IS SUCH A COOL HISTORICAL BIBLICAL THING, I CAN'T BEGIN TO TELL THE UNIQUENESS TO YOU! THIS IS THE EXACT SPOT WHERE THEY CUT OFF HIS LEGS AND LET HIM FALL (the statue, I mean)
MOSES ACTUALLY ABSOLUTELY STOOD HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

limestone above - below is a shot of some of our group Joshua took most of the ones below and Ramses II above

The son is inscripted here pushing the leg of his father, showing support to the Pharoah

above is unique, if you enlarge, you see the bird is looking to the Left, that means the inscription reads from right to left VERY unique
below is unique because it is a full intact head sculpture of Ptah, their most important God during this reign

the "cone" head is a Upper Egypt thing
the sphynix is of granite

on the wrist, you can see the iodized metals still preserved to show original color!

The dates hanging from the palm trees EVERYWHERE, really neat! Soon they'll be reds and yellows!

I wish this rubbish by the road was unique to this area :(
Joshua took this to show you all how sad

Jasmine before we left Memphis - bless her heart!

The kiddo's and I resting after the trip with free, fresh strawberry juice (in a/c not the outdoor garden below)

Kittens looking precious at the CSA outdoor cafe where I sit every S - Wed morning for 1 hr to study Arabic

THAT WAS A LOT!

THANKS FOR SHARING IT WITH US!

I only added half the photos, by the way!

I love the picture where Jasmine is pooped & Joshua is raring to go. Her expression says to me, "I came, I climbed, I saw it, now let's go!"

I haven't commented on the last couple of outing posts, not because there's nothing to say. More like because I can't seem to find grand enough words for it all. I'm floored by the pyramids, and the architecture, and the ancient ancient history there.... SO INCREDIBLE!!! and the scale... does it make you feel so small? I mean, they're like skyscrapers right? bigger even? it's just beyond my imnagination.... would love to be there with you seeing it in person....

thanks so so much for sharing your adventures with us all!!!!! wow....

oh btw, I LOVE the hats!!!! :D lol
